Art and the Saints: Perspective

This lesson was all about perspective. Objects can be viewed from many different perspectives. The ways that artists recreate objects and creatures allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the details and the larger picture. By recreating leaves using different artistic methods, the children were able to see them from a different perspective. For the rest of the semester we will continue to focus on the proper use of space and perspective.

First, each child selected 3-5 different kinds and sizes of leaves and glued them, smooth side down, to a piece of paper.

While the glue dried, the artists used colored pencils to draw the leaves as accurately as possible. They paid special attention to the unique features of the leaves - their color, shape, veins, texture, and wear.

Finally, the artists placed a third piece of paper on top of the leaves and created a rubbing of their collage. (While being mindful of how they were using their tools - see how these artists are holding their pencils and taking care not to crease their paper) Using this technique, the students could examine the details of the leaves from a new perspective.
