Coffee Filter Flowers

This past Friday the third graders continued to learn about positive and negative space. Using coffee filters, beads and marbles, markers, and pipe cleaners the students created a beautiful bouquet of flowers. (click on any photo to view it larger)

First they inserted a bead or marble into the coffee filter and secured it with a pipe cleaner. Next, they used different markers to color the coffee filter.

Until it looked something like this.

Finally, they removed the marbles and beads to reveal an interesting design on the once white filter. After making three filters, the children placed them on top of one another and secured the "petals" with a pipe cleaner to make one flower.

Ultimately, a wonderful bouquet was made!

Positive and Negative Space

Welcome to your Corpus Christi Catholic School second and third grade art blog. My name is Tasha Keathley-Helms and I am the parent of two second graders and the volunteer art teacher. Third graders will study art with me every Friday while second graders will alternate weeks. In week one students were introduced to positive and negative space. Using masking tape and tempera paint, groups of three students worked together to transform negative space (a blank poster board) into positive space (by making designs using masking tape) and then back to negative space (painting over the tape and peeling it away to reveal white space) again. In all of our lessons students will focus on proper use of positive and negative space. They will focus on theories of art while learning to manipulate different mediums and work with various tools.
